Minutes of the EGM held on 28th January 2013

Many thanks to all the parents, carers, staff and governors who attended the EGM. The key matter arising out of the meeting was the need to undertake a wider survey on the name of the school association. Do we want to keep it as City of Norwich School Association - CNSA - or change it? If you would like to contribute to the discussion please take part in the survey that we will be sending out to all association members and CNS students in the near future. If you have any comments or queries on the attached minutes please email cnsa@cnsmail.org.

Indoor Tabletop Sale - Saturday 9 March, 10.30 - 12.30pm
With over half the tables for this event already reserved, please ensure that you register your interest as soon as possible. Any tables that remain after half term will be offered to the wider community.

We are hoping to run a second hand uniform stall as well as providing a collection point for books for the Reading for Pleasure initiative so if you have any items that you would like to donate please let us know either by leaving items at reception or emailing cnsa@cnsmail.org.

As well as fundraising for CNSA we would like to contribute to Comic Relief by running a cake stall alongside our own refreshments. If you would like to donate some goodies for either Comic Relief or CNSA (or both!) could you please let us know as soon as possible.

Quiz and Chips Evening - Friday 19 April (time to be confirmed)
Would you like to bring your family and friends to this fun social evening? If you are interested please can you let us know as soon as possible. Further details will follow when we know how many people would like to come along.

Summer Fete and Dog Show - Sunday 16 June (time to be confirmed)
Please mark the date of our biggest fundraiser of the year in your diaries. If you would like to be involved in its planning of could you please talk to a committee member, or contact us via the above email address.

Thank you for all the support that has been coming from within school.

Message from Mr Nixon

A short while ago the DfE published its GCSE league tables and they made interesting reading; they are available for all to see on-line and are worth a look.

It is clear from various sources, that the ‘Gold’ measure is now 5 A*-C to include English and Maths GCSEs, this means without equivalencies.  The old overall 5 A*-C grades measure has become redundant; quite rightly so.  The difference between the two measures nationally is quite astonishing and in my view justifies the approach we have maintained (regardless of any pressures that may have come our way to do otherwise), of students doing rigorous GCSE exams.  Our gold standard result last year was 64% (achieving 5 A*-C including English and Maths at GCSE exams only) , this was significantly above the national average of 51.9%. The same approach applies to our sixth form where the regime of ‘A’ levels sets a strong foundation for our students' future.

It has been a real pleasure this week to deliver short presentations around ‘making speeches’ to each of our Year 9 English classes in readiness for their Rhetoric competition.   What has been particularly impressive is not only how well they listened but also the quality of the questions they were asking.  It is a fantastic initiative by the English department and I look forward to actual event on Thursday 28th February.

I hope everyone has an excellent half term break.  We return on Monday 25th February.

Jim Nixon
