BFI Film Academy – Superb film-makers at CNS

Five of our talented film-makers organised, hosted and ran a premiere of their own films in Norwich on Wednesday as part of their place on the British Film Institute’s regional Film Academy.

The five Sixth Formers (Emily Ledger, Joe Murray, Hamish Kidd, Chione Hardy and Adam Turner) won places on the BFI’s Film Academy programme run by the CultureWorks Foundation, and over the last 7-8 weeks they've been working in a group of 17 young people to create two films (a documentary and a short drama film). They've worked with mentors from the industry to write, plan, shoot and edit the films that were premiered on Wednesday night. The films were extraordinary: the standard was superb, and the students should be very proud indeed of what they’ve achieved. The documentary on attitudes to gay marriage has been selected to be used by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as part of their social issues resources, and there's talk of the drama being entered for national film festivals.

What was even more impressive, though, was that alongside making the films the students also organised a whole day of film-making workshops for schools (with speakers they had invited, such as the UK Film Council's Los Angeles representative!) as well as organising and running the evening’s screening at the Open Venue. The screening event was remarkable, complete with Oscars-style decoration and waiting staff, and it was extremely professional. They'll receive a Silver ArtsAward as part of this.

It is wonderful to see our Media students showing such creativity, commitment and ambition and achieving such great things. Our thanks go to Ellie Chapman and Lewis Wickwar at CultureWorks for organising this opportunity. And huge congratulations to Emily Ledger, Joe Murray, Hamish Kidd, Chione Hardy and Adam Turner for all they’ve achieved with the Film Academy.

 Maths Competition

On Wednesday evening CNS hosted the Regional Finals of the Yr. 10 Maths Team Competition in the Arc. 14 teams, representing 11 Secondary school from all across Norfolk took part. CNS fielded two teams for the first time, Mrs Rollison’s Girls team and Mr Rollison’s Boys team.
Pupils had to complete 6 gruelling rounds of mathematics, including ‘The Studied Round’. In preparation for the event they were all required to familiarise themselves with an area of mathematics beyond  the GCSE syllabus. The round of the competition this year asked questions on the topic of The Absolute Value Function, normally taught to Yr. 13 A’ Level maths students!!
The lead positions changed place several times throughout the evening, but after 3 hours the final results were in … and congratulations go to Mrs Rollison’s girls team (Hannah, Pooja, Nidhi & Sarah) who finished in third place.

Message from Mr Nixon

CNS is over 100 years old and the main building was built for around 300 students.  I love driving into school, seeing this grand traditional building right in front of me.  The Arc, further back on the right hand side, is an outstanding piece of modern design.  The open space that our fantastic playing fields provide, compliment everything that is good about our school.

Of course when schools were built, architects often did not consider student movement.  After all, in those days there was no ‘student voice’ let alone thinking about young people in the school design.  Recently the School Council completed a survey of student movement around the school; it made very positive and fascinating reading.  They have come up with some recommendations which are currently being looked at, particularly on how to deal with a couple of pinch points around the school at certain times.  When I show people around the school, I always ensure they see how well 1700 people move all at once, it is quite impressive.

The House Seniors have also put forward some proposals and we are looking at how we can implement them; all of these are great ideas.

It never fails to impress me how ‘solution focused’ our students are; always coming up with ideas to make things even better.
