CNSA Extraordinary General Meeting – Monday 28 January 2013, 7pm in the Sixth Form Common Room.

All parents, carers, staff and governors are invited to this meeting of the school association when we will be discussing the revised constitution that the CNSA committee wishes to submit to the Charities Commission.

The CNSA wishes to support the Reading for Pleasure initiative and in future will be collecting at its events any books that you, your family members or your friends would like to donate to the school. The first opportunity to contribute in this way will be at this meeting.

If you have suitable books to donate but are unable to drop them off on the 28th and/or if you wish to be sent a copy of the proposed constitution in advance of the meeting please email cnsa@cnsmail.org.

Year 9 Options

The Year 9 Options Evening will be on 31st January as per the school calendar; I would like to take this opportunity, ahead of the formal letter inviting you to the evening, to really encourage parents and carers to start having conversations with your children at home. There has been much in the press recently about government curriculum reforms which will reshape our educational landscape, and it is important that students currently undertaking choices recognise the back drop to their choices. The evening itself will attempt shed some light on what those changes will mean to CNS students now, as well as providing the traditional opportunity for Year 9 students to consider their first steps in truly personalising their experience in school. Our strongly held belief is that we should encourage students to make choices that will best meet their future needs in both education and future employment, but it is important that those conversations have started at home ahead of the evening.  I look forward to meeting you on the 31st January

Peripatetic Music Lessons

A reminder that all  peripatetic music lessons re-start next week. Students should check the timetables in the Music Department.

Parent and carer workshop – all welcome
                                  Monday 21st January from 5.30pm to 6.30pm
                                                   Sixth form common room

We are holding a parent and carer workshop on supporting your child to stay safe on line next Monday 21st January from 5.30pm until 6.30pm.

This will be a support and open discussion workshop lead by the Norfolk County e- safety advisor, Jill Duman.  We will discuss the issues of teenagers and young people managing their personal safety, as well as organising their digital footprint when they are applying to colleges, universities and jobs. It is open to any parent and carer with a student aged eleven to eighteen.

This is an informal event where you will have a chance to learn how to support and share ideas over cups of tea and coffee.  All welcome.

If you would like to attend this event, please email j.lockwood@cns-school.org to confirm your place.

Message from Mr Nixon

Welcome back for the start of the spring term, I hope an excellent Christmas and New Year was had by you all.

In my last message to you, I mentioned Pastoral Managers and student welfare issues along with the way in which we are responding to any concerns raised.   In such a large organisation it is important that students know who they can talk to when they have welfare problems and our Pastoral Managers are at the forefront of our work in this area.   Nicola Jervis, our Student Welfare Coordinator, will take on the more serious issues and she reports to Jean Tillyard our Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for student welfare.

We work extremely hard in dealing with such issues, it is therefore important that we communicate what we have done and its impact to both the students and parents concerned.  At the end of last term I took a personal step towards monitoring our effectiveness of managing issues such as the reporting and recording of bullying.  I chose a random sample of six students and organised a meeting to find out how they felt about the support we provided.  It proved to be a very worthwhile initiative and I intend to continue with it.  This term, if a student is invited to meet with me, a letter will be sent to the parents summarising any discussions.  Should your child or you as a parent have any welfare concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

I would like to emphasise how crucial it is that our students have good attitudes to learning and that they feel safe and valued.  We continue to emphasise this important area in assemblies, tutor time and various other aspects of day to day life in our school.  Students who are not progressing are given individual attention by their House Leader and will often be expected to do ‘catch up’ work after school.  This is not detention, but a way of supporting them so that they make the progress that we would expect and reach their full potential.

There is a fantastic atmosphere in our school and students and staff work very hard to make CNS a vibrant, successful and happy institution.  Every single student is important to us as well as your views and opinions.

We are grateful for the support you give to our school we would very much appreciate you taking a few minutes to fill out the Ofsted ‘Parent View’ survey. Your feedback and support are vital as we constantly strive to provide the best education possible for your child.

The survey can be accessed at the following address:

You will be asked to register for the site and provide an e mail address to which a username and password will be automatically sent.

Log in with the new username and password and type in City of Norwich School.

There are 12 questions to answer using a choice of responses, this should take no more than a few minutes to complete.

Thank you for taking time to complete this survey, your responses are greatly valued.
