Kids' Lit Quiz: regional heats
On Wednesday 21st November City of Norwich School hosted the regional finals of the Kids' Lit Quiz - an international children's book quiz aimed at students aged from 10-13. There was a tense atmosphere at the event as teams settled down for the 10-round competition. The rounds tested pupils’ literary knowledge with rounds based on ‘Trees in Literature’ to the intriguingly titled ‘Time’ round.
There was fierce competition with 27 teams from 13 different schools competing for the regional title. Both CNS teams performed very well and both teams were the high scorers in separate rounds winning a set of books. The eight pupils dazzled with some superb literary knowledge, working incredibly hard as a team and eventually took 4th and 5th place in the competition.
The CNS team members were: Eloise Brooke, Anna Howatson, Maeve Heywood, Charley Rooney, Cornelia Oxenham, Hannah Wheeler, Mia Nadarajan and Rinoah Walker.
A big thank you to Sue Brodie and Anne Elibol for organising the day; it was thoroughly enjoyed by all the pupils who attended.
A Level pupils visit Norwich Playhouse to watch ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’
On Wednesday, 35 students studying for their English Literature ‘A’ Level took up an exciting opportunity to watch a production of Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ at the Norwich Playhouse Theatre.
Students have been studying the play for their AS coursework and so seeing the performance on stage was an exciting prospect: ‘I laughed so much – it’s such a great comedy and the humour was even clearer when we watched it. I was really surprised by how hilarious the play still is a hundred of years after it was written’ one of the Year 12 students remarked.
Year 12 English Literature students will now analyse the play in class, a task many are looking forward to after watching the performance!
Message from Mr Nixon
Those of us who have been around for a few years will remember the days when communication was through letters, phone calls or face to face. It gave you time to reflect and consider before rushing into a decision or making a statement. Recently in the news, there has been much said about Twitter where a hasty comment can create a considerable amount of damage. In the 1970’ people said that the new millennium would bring much more leisure time; it hasn’t. Sadly time is a shortage commodity these days.
Steven Wright said that “everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time”. Following an operation during the summer holidays, I found myself in a very different situation; with a lot of time. Not being able to drive meant a bus journey from some distance away which gave me time to reflect and think. I also saw things during the route that I had never seen before. Movement was difficult at first so I had to carefully plan how I was going to move to a place only a few metres away. For quite a few weeks I was very dependent on other people, especially my family, who were my lifeline. In this hectic world my experiences were timely reminders on how much we all rely on each other and the benefits of having some quality time to reflect.
